On the 3rd Sunday of "odd" months, there is a local single action shooting match hosted by the Old West Shooting Society at Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley. Call 510-569-0213 for directions or go to their website at: www.chabotgunclub.com for more information [CLICK HERE FOR MAP].

The semi-monthly CAS matches at Chabot Gun Club generally consist of 6 intensive CAS stages.. so bring at least 150 rounds of rifle/pistol ammo and 40+ shotgun shells.. although ol' Rowdy has been known to put 20+ shotgun targets in a single stage. The fee for shooting at the Chabot matches is $12 per shooter.

Founded in 1986 by a fledgling group of enthusiastic cowboy action shooters, the Old West Shooting Society of Chabot is the oldest existing CAS organization in Northern California. As host to the annual CHABOT RANGE WAR (since 1994) as well as a challenging semi-monthly CAS match (on the 3rd Sunday of "odd" months) at the Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley, CA, in recent years, the O.W.S.S. has become widely known throughout the international CAS community as one of the finest independent CAS (non-SASS/non-WASA/non-NCOWS) clubs found anywhere.

One thing that sets O.W.S.S. matches apart from the rest is that rather than using amazingly large targets at ridiculously close distances, we strive for challenging stage design, incorporating realistic old-west situations and tactics with "must-go-down" targets, "on the clock" pistol reloads and rifle targets that really test your marksmanship skills. While we do observe strict firearms safety guidelines and shooter safely is of the utmost importance.. if you want to be 110% safe, maybe you should just stay home in bed!

Thus, there are several SASS rules we have modified or eliminated (if you've been at this sport a while, you may note many are actually old SASS rules that have been changed or modified in the past 12 years or so.. we prefer the OLD way).
If you are a newer SASS shooter, it may take a little time to get used to the changes, but, we are confident that once you try it, you'll be back! At Chabot, you are allowed to pre-load your '97 style pump shotgun at the loading table (like your rifle) and you may also stoke it during the stage (no load 2 shoot 2). We also encourage large caliber guns.. so, go ahead and bring your single shot or lever action 45-70 or 45-90 and use it as your main match rifle!
Come out to an O.W.S.S. match and check it out!

FROM PAST ISSUES OF THE WESTERN RECORD
SASS RULES MADE SIMPLE..

MAY '06:

TERRITORIAL GOVERNERS AND SASS FINALLY CLARIFY FIREARM MODIFICATION RULES!!
After weeks of negotiations the Territorial Governors and the Wild Bunch drafted new rules outlining the rules and regulations for firearm modifications, both external and internal.  The new rules will be published when the new 246 page rule book is released this winter, but to assist you shooters we have photographs of the allowable modifications.  This is just preliminary, but you will get the idea.

Hopefully this will clear up the confusion.

JANUARY '02: As you know SASS® is actively refining Cowboy Action ShootingTM (CAS) and with input from its members, the Wild Bunch, along with all of us Territorial Guv's, the rules of the game are constantly changing, changing, and changing, and changing. Those changes are there to increase the enjoyment, and safety of the sport. But these rules are not always easy to understand. So, I have been asked to clarify some of the these rules. In this installment, I will address the confusion over the cross-draw holster.
First off, contrary to common beliefs, the term "cross-draw" does not refer to an angry person who draws. Cross-draw is clearly defined in the SASS® Rules §12.354 (a) part 6 subsection 32. The confusion seems to come from what is a "legal" cross-draw holster. This is covered under §675.233.3(d) as "a western type, or style, holster, of leather or similar construction, carried in such a way that the butt of the revolver is not facing towards the rear of the competitor. If the angle of said holster is greater than the tangent of the root of the waist size of the shooter, or less than the 3 x .25 x 12 .123+X then, the holster configuration is deemed illegal. I hope this clarifies the cross-holster requirements. In our never-ending quest to makes the rules more simple and ensure this sport remains fun, we promise no less than 40 rule changes this year alone.

MARCH '02: In our ongoing effort to clarify the incredibly simple rules of Cowboy Action ShootingTM. This installment will cover the complex issue of penalties for misses, and procedurals. Not wanting to offend anyone, or make anyone feel bad for missing a large target at an incredibly close range, the Wild Bunch instituted the five second penalty rule (refer to SASS® Rules §1023.4 (a) part 12) for a "miss" (defined in SASS® Rules §1023.6 (b) part 9). This encourages the shooter to go fast and ignore that pesky requirement of aiming their firearm. Although this maybe in conflict with the “John Wayne” rule, or the so-called "spirit of the game", we would hate to think that someone might feel bad if they missed a target and were assessed a whole ten seconds for each miss (back in '84 we used to have the ten second miss penalty but after treating several cowboys for having severe inferiority complexes [directly attributed to missing targets] it was decided to reduce the penalty for misses, make the targets larger and bring them in closer). We also felt bad about assessing a procedural for each and every mistake made during a stage, God forbid, but we are only human, and why diminish someone’s self-esteem further by bringing to their attention the mistakes they made - so no matter how badly you screw up its only ten seconds - not a bad deal! So, again, I hopes this clarifies the reasons behind some of our rules.

WHY NOT COME CHECK IT OUT?
Registration starts around 8:30 am, so please try to arrive by then if you plan to shoot. There is a mandatory safety meeting that starts between 9 and 9:30 am. The shoot'n generally starts at or before 10 am. These semi-monthly matches (3rd Sunday of "odd" months, rain-or-shine) are open to new shooters (and please note that previous participation in one of our regular semi-monthly matches is a prerequisite to shooting in our annual 3-day "RANGE WAR!" match). A new shooter orientation is provided if you let the coordinators know who you are before the safety meeting.

First time CAS shooters are usually assigned to a posse with an experienced local CAS shooter as a mentor, to assist at the stages. If you need to share a guncart or need a loaner gun, please let someone in charge know when you arrive, so arrangements can be made. It is generally not a problem.. this is a very "neighborly" sport and most everyone treats newcomers like old friends.. it's part of "the Spirit of the Game."

There are also several other monthly CAS matches in the area hosted by various CAS clubs. If you don't mind driving an hour or two, you can shoot in a CAS (cowboy action shooting) or CLARS (cowboy lever-action rifle silhouette) match every weekend! [CLICK HERE] for more information on regularly scheduled cowboy action matches throughout Northern California.

Major DeBacle BCVC #12If you want to participate (or even just watch) it is asked, at a minimum, that you (guys) wear jeans (not designer jeans with big flashy tags or labels), a long sleeve button up shirt (cowboys didn't wear short sleeve shirts, sweats or tank tops) and leather shoes or boots. A cowboy hat is optional.. ball caps and tennis shoes are generally frowned upon. Gals should wear jeans or period clothing such as a riding skirt (long gauchos) and blouse, a western-style or basic prairie dress or even a fancy cowgirl outfit, if you have it!

It is always more fun when everyone is participating and getting into the "Spirit of the Game." Some participants look like they stepped out of a time machine and wear extremely intricate period outfits and hairdos, while some just make a small effort. Either way, any effort is appreciated by everyone. No one expects you to show up on day-one looking like a Wyatt Earp clone.. Take your time, shop around, take a peek at what is available in second-hand stores, ask questions of other shooters and be patient. Buy good quality stuff that will last, like they did back then.. Don't try to save time or money by cutting corners. You'll spend more in the long run and regret it in the end. This includes cowboy leather gear, hats, clothes, carts, guns, ammo.. everything! A little experience goes a long way. Give yourself time to learn.. this cowboy "stuff" is not a passing fad, it is a 150 year old tradition and it can be a way of life.

More important than any costume, you'll also need to bring adequate ear and eye protection.. this is an area where modern equipment is perfectly acceptable. You should wear whatever you feel most comfortable with. Most shooters wear custom molded or prescription molded ear-plugs, military style flange-type plugs (pictured right) or the foam "marshmallow" type plugs (found at any hardware store and many drug stores). Ear muff type hearing protection is acceptable, but seldom seen on a CAS range (except maybe on spectators). Click to go to Silencio.com

Some shooters wear "period" shooting glasses which are generally antique style frames fitted with modern polycarbonate safety lenses. Many feel the coverage of the old spectacle frames is not adequate, in which case, modern wrap-around shooting glasses (pictured above) are probably your best bet!

Maybe you can tell, we really love this sport and we want to see it expand and thrive in the future. This is one of the last shooting sports around that is still more fun to shoot than it is stressful. It is always a good idea to keep the "spirit of the game" in mind when you come out. CAS is an opportunity to have some good clean fun with old-style guns and some great people, not to see who is the "top gun" in a cutthroat competition!

You don't have to join or belong to any clubs or organizations to participate in cowboy action shooting.
SASS, NCOWS or WASA membership is not required to
shoot at our local O.W.S.S. matches.
