| NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CAS CLUBS & MONTHLY MATCHES |
All information here is subject to change
and is provided as a courtesy. Contact
individual
clubs to confirm any details.
Most local CAS clubs start their registration
around 8 and 8:30 am and hold their pre-match
shooter's meeting around 8:30 to 9 am. Most
begin shooting about 9 to 10 am. Unless instructed
otherwise, plan to arrive by 8 am if you
intend to shoot in the match. If you are
new to the sport of CAS or have questions
about club rules, please be sure to arrive
early and contact someone in charge to let
them know you would like a "walk thru"
and/or a mentor on your posse to help guide
you. It will make the day a lot less stressful
for you and everyone else! Another good idea
is to attend a match as a non-shooter and
not only attend the shooter briefing, but
follow one posse, or watch one particular
shooter.. pay attention to what they do,
the preperations they make and feel free
to ask questions. Everyone is really friendly
and willing to make time for new shooters.
Shooter fees usually range from $10
to $20,
depending on the range, shooting class
and
club affiliation or membership status.
All
matches welcome visitors and appreciate
western
"period" clothing by all
participants
(and spectators). Adequate eye & ear protection are required
for all participants and spectators. Most of these clubs are SASS affiliated
and generally follow standard SASS rules
(unless noted otherwise).
Local match dates may be changed as a result
of date conflicts with annual, regional or
championship matches nearby. Keep in mind
that most clubs host a 3 or 4 day annual
match that usually falls on their regular
match weekend. Many clubs require that you
participate in one of their "monthly"
matches at least once before you can participate
in their "annual" match. Check
individual club websites for updates, changes
and annual match information.
The listing below is pretty much in chronological
order for their monthly matches. If you find any discrepancies, please let me know
so I can update accordingly.

OWSS Match Director Rowdy Yates, BCVC #13 |
The Chabot Marksmanship Range is located
near the Lake Chabot Campgrounds and are accessed
through the "Marciel Gate" off
Redwood Road. There is no cellphone access
in the area and it is at least 5 miles from
the nearest gas station.
Match fee is $12 per shooter. They usually
shoot from 9 am to 1 pm, rain or shine,
sleat or snow, and go out for Mexican food
afterward. They generally follow the old
SASS rules (circa 1987), they use smaller
targets and some of their stages generally
favor those with lots of "knock down power"
(i.e. larger caliber bullets) and Winchester
'97 pump shotguns. |
| As with old SASS rules they allow you to
"stoke" your '97 style shotgun
to full capacity at the loading table (hammer
down on closed empty chamber) and stage it
loaded, like your rifle (no load-two, shoot-two
here!). One item of note is that they allow
(and encourage) the use of big-bore guns.
It is not unusual to see shooters using 45-70's
for their main match rifle. Also, if you
have a pocket pistol.. bring it!

Range War (mid-September).
