Faro Equipment:
Dealing Boxes: I am proud to be able to offer excellent brass dealing boxes that are handmade in the United States. These are silver soldered on the inside, so no seams show on the outside. They come in plain yellow brass (pictured below, right) and nickel silver plate (pictured below, left). Both will hold a good shine and should be coated with good metal wax or a quality sealing compound to prevent tarnishing.. unless you want to let it build a natural patina.
Smooth function is critical when working a dealing box and of course it takes a good deal of practice to ensure you are moving the cards in a fluid motion, with the correct pressure and at the correct angle. I have found that with a well broken in Parnell deck, these dealing boxes are surprisingly forgiving and dealing can be done effortlessly, even after a few too many shots of whiskey <grin>.
These dealing boxes are suitable for standard size playing cards (3½" x 2½"). The box is a universal design and every care has been taken to reproduce the original fit and finish of an authentic 19th century piece that would have been used on riverboats and saloons from the late 1820's through the mid 1920's. Each box weighs about a pound and a half and they sit firm on a cloth or felt table top with green felt attached to the bottom. The elevator plate is removable and has a small crescent cut in the edge, just as they were made 150 years ago (photo). For a brief history of the faro dealing box, [CLICK HERE] Please understand these boxes are reproductions of old, used saloon equipment and as such, they may have minor cosmetic flaws, light scratches, or minor dings and scuffs that would ordinarily be seen as a result of normal wear-and-tear. My guarantee is that these boxes are fully functional, smooth working and suitable for use in any saloon setting. While these reproductions are new, they are not undistressed museum pieces nor are they being sold as mint new manufacture items. They are intended to appear to be used, working equipment, which is fully functional and will serve you well as a faro dealer. If you are expecting a spanking new "mint" box with Japanese precision CNC machining and a pristine mirror finish, please try my competition.

Tips:
It is best to get the finish the way you want it (whether that is highly polished or with a nice patina), then apply a quality metal wax, lacquer or polish sealer to prevent further tarnishing or corrosion. Be sure you remove any excess polish or wax before it hardens or soils your cards. If you have any other tips, please pass them on and I will add them here! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by e-mail. Also see the links below for more information on 18th Century gambling and the traditional game of faro. |
