Welcome to www.FaroKing.com,

A variety of coated historical & reproduction playing card decks

The Real Deal vs. Modern Decks:
I offer high quality uncoated reproduction cards for those seeking the most "period correct" decks for their old west saloon gaming. Unfortunately, just like the originals, the beautiful reproduction "pasteboards" I offer elsewhere on this site [HERE] do not really hold up well to damp, dirty hands and tend to become soiled quickly if not handled and stored properly.

In the game of faro, only the dealer touches the cards, so this in not really a big deal. But, many of our customers have asked for a line of quality coated cards that give the appearance of traditional old west cards, with the luxury of sealed modern cardstock that can be used in games where some of the players that might be smoking, drinking and eating while handing the cards in "round" games, such as poker, brag, whist and euchre or fast-paced "banking" games such as Blackjack and Monte.
I am glad to be able to offer quality reproduction cards from U.S. Games Systems that have the look of traditional old west cards on modern coated stock as well as a wide variety "historical" cards that are loaded with facts, figures, flags, uniforms and celebrated heroes and villains of the old west.
Reproduction & Historical Decks:
Below, I offer 6 reproduction decks that are copied from the designs of antique playing cards that were used in the old west and are suitable for reenactors or others wishing to use coated cards that have the appearance of traditional card decks used from the 1860's on. Each offering is clearly marked as reproduction and are fabricated from coated modern cardstock. Please be aware that even with their modern coatings, these decks are so close to the look of real vintage cards that without the boxes, these cards (particularly the 1865 Illuminated deck) have been know to fool antique dealers, collectors and many so-called card experts.

I also offer 9 other decks that are perfectly suitable for gameplay (as they all have corner indices), but they are marked as "historical" decks because they feature historical images, facts, figures or biographical information that can be used to study old west history or for other educational purposes. These are all fantastic decks; well made and with crisp graphics, but they are modern bridge sized decks. Many of these decks are an ideal pocket reference for Civil War reenactors.

The reproduction cards below are standard poker size decks, 2½" x 3½"
1864 "Highlanders" Deck

Box cover, 6 of Hearts & King of Spades.

I GUARANTEE THE LOWEST "DELIVERED" PRICE ON THESE HIGHLANDER DECKS.
Civil War Playing Card Deck
This is a faithful reproduction of an 1864 Cohen Mfg. "Highlanders" deck. The face of the box is printed with a copy of an original paper pack, complete with the hand canceled tax stamps, dated June 2, 1864. This modern manufacture deck has full-length, single ended court figures, square corners and traditional 19th century, non-indexed styling. This deck actually includes two Ace of Spades cards, one is the traditional embellished maker's mark type that was used at the time and one is a more contemporary single spade, for ease of play. It also includes two cards with information on early American playing cards, which can be used as "jokers." These cards are "medium thickness" (approx. .012" or 12/1000's of an inch) and have a lightly coated surface that resists dirt and moisture, ideal for playing round games, such as poker, brag, whist and euchre, games where the players may handle the cards, such as Blackjack and games requiring continuous or repeated shuffling, such as Monte. There are 55 cards in each deck.

Reproduction Civil War Illuminated Playing Card Deck

In the style of the times, this deck includes full-length, single-ended court figures and traditional 19th century, non-indexed styling, very detailed graphics and a beautiful embellished maker's mark ace. This deck was the premium deck of it's time as it was made using the most advanced manufacturing processes available in 1865 New York. These lightly coated reproductions would have been considered thin (approx. .01" or 10/1000ths of an inch thick) high-end cardstock in their era and are very difficult to tell from the real thing! This deck is packaged in a unique upright display box, as shown here.

Tips:
These common-sense tips should be followed to ensure the long life of your new playing cards.

You should always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the cards and avoid the use of any oils, creams, salves or lotions on your hands that may soil the cards or cause them to tend to collect dirt. Try to play on a clean, smooth and dry playing surface, away from food and spills.

Do not "rubber band" or otherwise tie or constrict your unused deck in one particular area. It is recommended that you use a quality card box, such as the ones we offer here, or carefully replace your deck in the original packaging.

Open the pack by slipping the top flap with a small knife. Fold open the flaps and slide the deck out. To replace, simply insert 1/2 of the cards, then spread the inserted stack and slide the remainder of the deck in the gap. Fold he top flap down and store in a safe dry place.

Avoid over-flexing the cards when shuffling the deck. Consider the use an overhand shuffle or thorough cut-and-mix technique, if possible, so cards are not flexed or bent at all. Avoid smashing the edges of the cards together as this can cause fraying and blunting of the tips and edges. Remember, in the game of Faro, only the dealer touches the cards. Poker involves the handling of cards by all participants and can lead to the early demise of an authentic, uncoated, pasteboard deck. In this case, you may want to consider using a slick, coated card deck, made with slightly thinner paper stock, such as "Highlanders" by U.S. Games Systems Inc. (pictured right and offered above).

Do not leave your deck inside a faro dealing box for long periods (like overnight or when storing your equipment) and ensure the inside and outside of your dealing box is always clean and free of any polishing residue, tarnish or corrosion.

Keep in mind that faro dealing boxes can be particularly sensitive to individual card thickness. You may need to experiment with a variety of decks to find which brand works best with your particular dealing box. In most cases, you will want to use the thickest cards possible; that being, the thickest cards that will slide smoothly out the exit gate.

If you have any other tips, please pass them on and I will add them here!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us by e-mail. Also see the links below for more information on 18th Century gambling and the traditional game of faro.
