Proudly offering..
Reproduction Faro Playing Card Decks
For Civil War Reenactors & Old West Saloon & Riverboat Gamblers

The Real Deal:
I am proud to be able to offer the very finest reproduction 19th Century, square-cornered, uncoated, playing card decks available anywhere, at any cost. In years of research and purchasing dozens of various reproduction "Civil War Era" playing card decks from a wide variety of manufacturers and distributors, I have found the faro card decks from Parnell Playing Card Co. to be the closest to the "real deal." These cards are much closer to the look and feel of true "pasteboards" as would have been found in the employ of card sharps and other professional gamblers throughout the American Frontier from 1850 through the 1880's.

Please understand that there is more to an Old West playing card deck than simply having single-ended court figures and non-indiced cards. These quality reproduction card decks are very well made, with quality printing and deep, rich colors. They also have a consistent look and feel from pack to pack. They are not plastic coated, laminated or waxed as you will find with other, lesser quality, samples (although I do now offer a line of coated reproduction and educational decks too [CLICK HERE]).

These particular cards are on thicker, heavyweight, card stock (.016" or about about 1 to 3/1000th of an inch thicker than a standard-weight business card), as you would have found in the period. The art work is historically accurate, both front and back. Please take a look at the sample photos of these cards both below and above. Also, don't forget to check out our exquisite wood card boxes below and our brass faro dealing boxes.

The Parnell playing cards have an average thickness of .016" (16/1000ths of an inch)

Quality Packs:
The packaging on these decks comes in a variety of designs. I cannot guarantee you will receive specific packaging as availability varies. But, please feel free to list the number of each particular design you prefer and I'll do my level best to get you the design(s) you request. Otherwise, I will supply you will a variety of what is most available at the time your order is filled.
The packaging on these cards is simple paper wrapping, as was used for most of the 19th Century. Each of our packs contains 52 cards and 2 additional cards with various information printed on the faces. These additional cards could easily be used as jokers or lightly marked on the face to replace cards you may lose on the trail. I suggest you buy at least 2 decks so you can rotate them, as necessary, during the course of play and ensure you always have a complete deck on hand.

A Bonus!
As a special bonus to you, I have prepared a great brochure with the basic rules of the traditional old west game of faro as well as information on other popular 19th Century saloon gambling games. It is just a one sheet bi-fold flier, but it is packed with lots fantastic information in an easy to read format which is great for helping your players get clued into the game and build their understanding and confidence. I will include one of these fliers with each Parnell faro deck you order. Feel free to copy and distribute the flier to your players and participants at your old west and reenacting venues!

Prices:
All prices include S&H and any applicable sales tax. Other sites may tease you with what appears to be a low price, but once you add in shipping, handling and any applicable tax, their prices are really higher than mine. Don't be fooled! If you find a cheaper price for similar quality reproduction square-cornered faro decks anywhere, please let me know. I am confident these are the highest quality and most "period correct" reproduction playing card decks available anywhere at any price and I am certain my prices for these decks are competitive. I have seen these very same decks selling on eBay for $24.99 (each, plus shipping & tax) and up!

Tips:
These common-sense tips should be followed to ensure the long life of your new playing cards.

You should always wash your hands thoroughly before handling the cards and avoid the use of any oils, creams, salves or lotions on your hands that may soil the cards or cause them to tend to collect dirt. Try to play on a clean, smooth and dry playing surface, away from food and spills.

Do not "rubber band" or otherwise tie or constrict your unused deck in one particular area. It is recommended that you use a quality card box, such as the ones we offer here, or carefully replace your deck in the original packaging.

Open the pack by slipping the top flap with a small knife. Fold open the flaps and slide the deck out. To replace, simply insert 1/2 of the cards, then spread the inserted stack and slide the remainder in the gap. Fold the top flap down and store in a safe dry place.

Avoid over-flexing the cards when shuffling the deck. Consider the use an overhand shuffle or thorough cut-and-mix technique, if possible, so cards are not flexed or bent at all. Avoid smashing the edges of the cards together as this can cause fraying and blunting of the tips and edges. Remember, in the game of Faro, only the dealer touches the cards. Poker involves the handling of cards by all participants and can lead to the early demise of an authentic, uncoated, pasteboard deck. In this case, you may want to consider using a slick, coated card deck, made with slightly thinner paper stock, such as "Highlanders" by U.S. Games Systems Inc. (pictured right and available here).

Do not leave your deck inside a faro dealing box for long periods (like overnight or when storing your equipment) and ensure the inside and outside of your dealing box is always clean and free of any polishing residue, tarnish or corrosion.

Keep in mind that faro dealing boxes can be particularly sensitive to individual card thickness. You may need to experiment with a variety of decks to find which brand works best with your particular dealing box. In most cases, you will want to use the thickest cards possible; that being, the thickest cards that will slide smoothly out the exit gate.

If you have any other tips, please pass them on and I will add them here!
